Develop Your Story. Build Your Career. Grow Your Business.
After being cut from the high school soccer team, I switched gears and set a goal to be a writer for Sports Illustrated. Everything I did from that moment on was focused on making that happen, but then one of my first mentors told me that having a goal is key as long as I don't turn down any opportunities to grow in my career. It was that advice that led me to take a marketing position at a Big Ten Conference school as my first full-time job, which I quickly learned was just different way to tell a story. I spent 13 years telling stories about these amazing student-athletes and coaches, which resulted in setting attendance records in every admission-charging sport.
Being able to have an impact on hundreds of student-athletes was incredible, but I wanted to do more so I took a job at a sports marketing agency where I consulted for dozens of colleges, universities and professional teams. After four years, again I wanted to make an even bigger impact so I accepted a job at the NCAA where I was able to help 350 schools tell their stories to engage their fans.
Throughout my entire career, I spent time with staff members, clients, student-athletes and loyal readers of my blog sharing advice on how to find their voices, especially creating a persona online that embodies who they are through what they are doing personally and professionally. This individual branding not only allowed them to share how they contribute to their organizations, but also how these initiatives showcase their strengths to grow in their career.
